The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service (Transit Police Service) is a young police agency that became fully operational on December 4, 2005. The Transit Police Service preserves and maintains the public peace, prevents crimes and offences against the law, aids in the administration of justice, and enforces the laws in force in British Columbia. Transit Police Officers work in close partnership with police officers from municipal police agencies and RCMP detachments in the lower mainland to provide enhanced safety and security for the travelling public, transit employees as well as the broader community. The Transit Police Service delivers policing services to the multiple modes of the transit system: rail (SkyTrain and West Coast Express), bus, and the SeaBus. As the Transit Police Service is a supplementary police agency - the jurisdictional police agency retains primary responsibility for policing in each jurisdiction.
Currently, the majority of Transit Police Officer deployment relates to investigation and enforcement operations of unlawful activity on or around the SkyTrain system. The Transit Police Service regularly engages in targeted enforcement and joint projects with jurisdictional police to address priority crime and safety issues. As well, there is constant sharing and exchange of crime analysis and intelligence information with other law enforcement agencies. Transit Police Officers have similar powers to other police officers in British Columbia and they are trained and certified as police officers through the Police Academy - Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Name Change
The Provincial Government replaced the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority Act with the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Act in November 2007. This legislation also changed the legal names for the Police Service and Police Board. Operational transition to the SCBCTAPS name will occur during 2008. This website will be updated in the coming months to reflect the new name and to provide current information on the Police Service and Police Board.
